Winter Weather Workout Tips: How to Adapt to the Cooler Temperatures

Here comes the cold weather! Many people do well exercising when the weather is great in the warmer months. Long trail walks, easy drives to your nearest workout facility, and longer evening daylight hours help so much. However, don’t let the cold and change of season deter you from getting good workouts in this winter.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week. These recommendations do not change over the winter months, so it’s time to rethink your plan. Follow these winter weather workout tips to stay active this season.

Winter Weather Workout Tips

Bundle up and Get Outside

Walking doesn’t have to end when the temperature drops. Layers can work best for varying temperatures. Thermal tops, fleece jackets, hats and gloves are cold weather essentials. Outside walking can still be a major part of your everyday fitness plan, as long as you dress for it. And even though it’s cold, don’t forget sunscreen!

Outdoor winter workouts can also add variety to your fitness plan. This can be a great way to mix up your normal routine and try something different. Hiking is always a great way to see new sights and challenge your body. Don’t count out other outdoor winter activities, either. Ice skating, skiing and sledding are big calorie burners and a great way to work different muscle groups. Grab the family, get outside and give them a try!

Take Advantage of the Light Hours

It can be difficult to be motivated to move when it is cold AND dark. Take advantage of daylight hours for squeezing in physical activity. For some, this may mean changing things up a bit. Add in some exercise during your lunch break or a quick workout when you get home from work to relieve the stress of the day. The change of pace can keep you motivated and may be easier to complete before it gets dark outside.

Consider a Gym

A gym is a great way to make sure you meet your fitness needs on a chilly day. Take your time to find activities that work for you. From indoor exercise equipment to heated pools and group glasses, gyms offer a lot of perks that can help you stay active with a variety of workouts.

Look for Inside Options

Let’s face it: some days, you may not want to leave the house, but that shouldn’t deter you from a workout. There are many online workouts you can complete from home. Search YouTube or fitness articles for different activities such as yoga, strength training or even indoor walking. Exercising from the comfort of your home can help take some of the pressure off, and it’s also very convenient for your schedule.

Don’t Forget the Basics

All the same principles apply to winter workouts. A proper warmup and cool down period is always necessary. Don’t forget to add in a variety of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility workouts. Each element is important to your overall fitness.

Focus on a fun and varied winter exercise plan and watch your health and fitness levels soar!
