Stay on Track: Strategies for Healthy Holiday Habits

The holiday season is upon us, that time of year when we all indulge in festive food, drinks and sweets. It’s a period when we tend to let our guard down and forget about healthy eating and workouts. However, if you’ve been working hard towards your health goals, the holiday season can pose a challenge.

You don’t have to abandon your goals completely, though. With some strategies in place, you can keep your workouts going, eat mindfully, and maintain healthy holiday habits.

Plan Ahead

As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. This is doubly true during the holiday season when temptation is everywhere. Rather than giving in to impulsive decisions, it’s best to plan ahead. You can do this by scheduling your workouts for several weeks in advance, packing healthy snacks and meals, and strategizing for holiday parties. If you know you have an event in the evening, plan your meals earlier in the day so you can regulate your portion sizes.

Keep Moving

The last thing you want to do is give up your fitness routine because you’re busy running errands or holiday shopping. You don’t have to commit to a full-length workout all the time; even 10-15 minutes of exercise is better than nothing. Plus, squeezing in a brisk walk after a big holiday meal can aid digestion. Instead of trying to find time for a full workout, aim to incorporate movement throughout the day.

Moderation is Key

We all love the seasonal cookies, pies and treats that are unavoidable during the holiday season. However, moderation is essential if you want to stay on track with your health goals. Instead of sampling every dessert, choose one or two that you really want, and savor them mindfully. Don’t deprive yourself, as it can trigger overindulgence later. Focus on enjoying the atmosphere and socializing rather than solely fixating on food.

Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is a great way to stay on track with your health goals while still enjoying the holiday season. Before you fill your plate, take a moment of gratitude and mindfulness. Pay attention to how you’re feeling and stop when you’re comfortably satisfied. Eating slowly and savoring each bite allows you to enjoy the food while remaining mindful of your health goals.

Get Support

Having a support system is essential for achieving your health goals. Enlist the assistance of family and friends to help you stay on track. Let them know your goals and ask for their help in creating an environment that supports you. You can also participate in accountability challenges or groups on social media to gain extra support.

The holiday season can be challenging, but you don’t have to let it derail your health goals. By planning ahead, keeping active, practicing moderation, eating mindfully and seeking support, you can stay on track while still enjoying the season’s festivities.

Remember, the essence of the holiday season is about enjoying the people you care about and the moments you share, and the food and drinks are just the cherry on top. Be kind to yourself and enjoy the season in health and happiness!
