Can Weight Management Improve Your Mental Health?

Mental Health and Weight Management

May marks the observance of Mental Health Month, which encourages Americans from all across the country to recognize that mental health is important. A healthy mind is key to happiness, productivity and progress – and especially key to weight management!

Recognizing the Importance of Mental Health

When we are free of depression, anxiety, stress, worry and mental negativity of all kinds, we open ourselves up to the possibilities that life offers. We can truly live life to its fullest!

At some point or another, we’ve all felt the adverse effects of declining mental health. Maybe it’s prolonged stress from work or school, a family feud or even someone we love who is facing illness. Maybe you’ve struggled with periods of depression or anxiety that won’t go away – no matter the cause. You are likely familiar with the heavy burden that poor mental health brings with it, but it’s just as important to recognize the positive effects of a healthy mind:

  • Maintained physical health and wellbeing
  • Positive life choices and daily decisions
  • Ability to handle life’s ups and downs
  • Healthy relationships with friends, family, etc.
  • Greater productivity and work/school success

Manage Your Weight by Managing Your Mental Health

Studies show that poor mental health makes it increasingly difficult to manage weight. It depletes our energy levels, affects our appetite, discourages healthy choices, worsens self-esteem and wreaks havoc on our body’s natural processes.

But on the upside, managing your mental health can also help you manage your weight! The mind is closely connected to the body, and the two operate side by side. Here’s a look at some positive steps you can take to manage your weight and mental health at the same time:

  • Exercise Daily – This will help you burn calories, build muscle and release endorphins
  • Meditate Often – Try this mental exercise to boost relaxation and promote well-being
  • Choose Healthy Foods – Lean, nutritious foods help the body and the mind
  • Get Social – Grab your friends/family for a group exercise and quality time together
  • Spend Time in Nature – You’ll get some exercise, take-in the fresh air and move around
  • Find an Outdoor Hobby – You’ll gain exercise, have fun and work toward a goal
  • Get Better Sleep – This will boost mental clarity, regulate your metabolism and more!
