All Progress Counts: How to Keep a Health Journal

Use a health journal to stay on-track with weight management

A health journal is an excellent way to document your journey with health and weight management. It allows you to express yourself and track your progress so you are always moving toward your goals! No matter where you are on your health journey, a personalized journal can be a great tool to have in your toolbox along the way.

Why is a Health Journal Useful?

Your journey with weight and health is more than just a number on a scale. You are changing your eating habits, incorporating exercise and aligning your body with your mind. That’s a lot to keep track of! A journal makes it easy.

A health journal serves a variety of purposes. Maybe you want to track your weight and create a visual representation of where you stand each week or month. Maybe you want to use it for food and log your grocery shopping lists as well as healthy recipes you want to try. You can even use it to track the different exercises you’ve enjoyed that you’d like to try again.

A personalized health journal that is used frequently will give you a sacred place to talk about your challenges, successes, fears and desires. This can help you reach your goals more effectively and maintain your progress because the journey with weight is never-ending!

Tips for Keeping a Health Journal

  • Buy Something Sturdy – Invest in a journal that is tough and will last a long time.
  • Invest in Utensils – Use what suits you and piques your interest! For a more colorful journal, consider the use of colored pencils and highlighters.
  • Date Your Entries – For every entry you journal, list the date so you can keep track of progress and other kinds of measurements.
  • Journal about Nutrition – A health journal is a great place to keep your grocery lists, healthy recipes, calories/foods consumed and eating habits.
  • Journal about Fitness – You can also track your specific workouts, number of repetitions, duration, workout intensity and more.
  • Be Vulnerable – The weight management journey isn’t mentally easy. Use this space to express your feelings, worries, concerns and daily thoughts.
  • Document Non-Scale Victories – The scale isn’t an “end all, be all.” Write down other successes you’ve had such as fitting into a smaller clothing size or gaining more energy.
  • Journal Often – A health journal won’t work if you don’t use it. Try to journal for a few (or more!) minutes a day or at least a few times per week.
