Workout Wisdom: Enjoying Sports as an Adult

Adult Sports basketball, modest exercise

When many of us think of sports, we either tune our attention to local/national athletic teams or reminisce about our youth, where sports were prevalent both on the playground and in after-school extracurricular activities.

But – did you know that enjoying sports as an adult can be a GREAT way to stay active and meet your long-term weight and health goals? Unfortunately, time constraints and responsibilities often make it hard to commit to physical exercise, let alone sports. However, there are plenty of ways to get moving and squeeze in some friendly competition as part of your fitness plan — especially when you great creative!

How to Get into Sports as an Adult

Just like other extracurricular activities, sports come in all shapes and sizes. No matter where you are on your fitness journey, there’s sure to be one that’s just right for you!

Here are a few simple, easy ways to enjoy sports in your adult years:

Find a Community League

Whether it’s a low-key bowling league, kickball team, tennis group or other organized sport, many local community and fitness centers offer a list of sports to choose from. Check their Web site or inquire in person as to what places in your community offer organized sports for adults your age.

Find an Individual Sport to Play

Not all sports require teams! Think about what kinds of exercise you’d be able to do on your own after work or during the weekend. Maybe it’s golf, bowling, track and field, swimming or cycling. Try to pick something that challenges you but also entertains you, and don’t be afraid to think outside of the box!

Rally-up Your Friends and Family

Rather than spending a weekend afternoon crowding around the television or dining room table, why not take the fun outside? Your backyard, local park or sports field offers plenty of opportunity for sport-like fun. Consider getting a group together for a soccer game, football game, or anything that gets you moving!

Keep it Friendly

Professional sports with teams that compete for titles and money probably won’t fit your lifestyle, so remember to keep your own sports fun and low-key. You can feel the excitement of friendly competition while still having a blast and reaping the benefits of great exercise.

Make Sports a Part of Your Exercise Routine

Exercise is a crucial component of weight management, so it’s important that you stay consistent and dedicated to physical activity. Instead of worrying about how you’ll squeeze in sports on top of your already busy schedule, why not have them replace one of your workout routines? Instead of hitting the gym, try taking the fun outside for a change. Variety is key to fun and success!

Even as an adult, sports offer an excellent way to stimulate your mind and body. Not only do they help with burning calories, but they’re a great way to build muscle, gain endurance, relieve stress and improve coordination!

Remember to start small, assess your current fitness level and improve gradually. The important thing is to make fitness fun, so always make sure you’re enjoying your exercise!
