See these Pasta Alternatives for a Lighter (but Tasty!) Plate

Try these healthy pasta alternatives

Everyone loves a good plate of pasta, which is why pasta alternatives are such a welcome contribution to current health and wellness trends. If you’re looking to substitute traditional pasta dishes in favor of those on the lighter side, you’re in luck! Many options are available.

A Note about Pasta

First off, please know we aren’t referring to pasta as a “bad” food. Everyone has different preferences, restrictions and “guidelines” when it comes to nutrition and weight management. And of course, we’re a big believer in mindfulness and moderation.

With that said, pasta dishes are typically higher in calories, fats, carbohydrates and sugars. Most noodles are enriched with flour, eggs and other heavy ingredients. If you’re looking to lighten-up your plate, consider subbing those noodles for a different option.

Healthy Alternatives

Most pasta alternatives can be found in your local supermarket or specialty store. Some can also be found online. Prices do vary, but there are alternatives out there to fit every budget. Our advice? Try as many as you can and pick your top favorites to add to your cookbook! Try these:

  • Pre-packaged or spiralized zucchini noodles, baked or boiled
  • Soba noodles rich with fiber, protein and a nuttier taste
  • Shirataki noodles, rich with fiber and virtually no fat or calories
  • Spaghetti squash, cut into cubes or spooned from inside the squash
  • Black bean noodles, often sold in gluten-free grocery aisles
  • Traditional pasta made with whole grains instead
  • Veggie noodles spiralized from carrots, sweet potatoes and more
  • Shredded cabbage for extra texture and flavor
  • Sliced or shredded Brussels sprouts, also for texture

Pasta Alternative Quick Tip:

If they don’t come pre-packaged, some of these alternatives can feel like a lot of work. Consider investing in a spiralizer to transform your veggies into “noodles” you can pair with sauces, meats and other veggies. Also make sure you wash your produce before cooking with it.

Last but not least: think outside the box! You’re not limited to the options we listed above. Consider your favorite textures and brainstorm what will take the place of traditional pasta noodles. You might be surprised at the different flavor combinations you come up with!
