Healthy Tips for Your Child’s New School Year

Healthy Tips for Your Child's New School Year

Cue the class bell… school is back in session!

As Summer begins to close-out this August, children across the nation are returning to their classrooms for a brand-new year filled with learning and excitement. But if you’re a parent, however, the start of a new school year may mean many new responsibilities that arise after a fun-filled Summer with your family.

Just like good health is important for maintaining success at your very own job, good health is also required for your child to perform their best in class. A sharp brain requires many physical and mental  precautions/responsibilities.

With a busy schedule of your own, how can you help ensure your child has their most successful school year yet?

Set Your Child Up for Success in the New School Year

As a parent, there are many steps you can take to help set your child up for success. Here are a few ways you can promote better health in the home and in the classroom:

  • Brown-bag (or Lunch box) the Good Stuff – Cafeteria lunches can be questionable. Packing your child’s lunch with fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat proteins and low-fat dairy options will provide excellent brain food to get them through the day.
  • Make Sure they Eat Breakfast – A healthy breakfast will give your child the energy they need to start the day off right — focused and motivated! Want more information on the importance of breakfast? CLICK HERE to read on.
  • Encourage Regular Exercise – If your child isn’t getting regular exercise through a Physical Education course, encourage them to go out and play after school and on the weekends. Maybe it’s family walks/runs, bicycle rides, extracurricular activities such as sports or even simple playground fun.
  • Set a Bedtime Curfew – Sleep is critical for optimal school performance. Your child likely needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night to function at their best, so setting a bedtime can help ensure they stay healthy and rested.
  • See Your Child’s Pediatrician – Regular doctor visits will keep you up-to-date on all aspects of your child’s health – from weight, allergies and colds to serious health conditions you may not have recognized.

When your child is at home, you have more control over their behaviors and habits. But when they’re away at school, you’ve got to get creative and proactive. Cheers to a happy and healthy school year!
