The world of nutrition is complicated – especially when you’re on the journey with weight and health! These days, we’re swarmed with messages online, in magazines and in numerous advertisements about “power foods” that are perfectly tailored for our health and weight-loss goals. While these trendy foods are certainly popular and widely discussed in the media and in many health plans, are they the real deal?

What You Should Know about these Trendy Foods

Greek yogurtGreek yogurt – Typically known for its high protein content, less sugar and live bacterial cultures, this trendy food is a top favorite for many. It’s especially loved for its ability to keep us energized and help our digestive system! However, not all Greek yogurt is the same! Many of these products (such as Greek yogurt-covered pretzels or cereal bars) have tons of added sugar and other artificial ingredients. Make sure you read
the label before purchasing!

protein barProtein bars – Protein bars are another popular food item, especially for those with busy lifestyles who are looking for an on-the-go meal or snack. Many protein bar varieties, however, are packed with added sugars and carbohydrates. Some of them don’t even have a lot of protein! Always be sure to read the nutrition label on this trendy food, and strive for something that has at least 15-20 grams of protein and five or less
grams of sugar.

quinoaQuinoa – You see it everywhere nowadays from salads and side dishes to pastas and even veggie burgers! When compared to other grains, quinoa has more protein and fiber – making it a favorite ingredient to cook with. It’s definitely a healthier alternative to other grains such as standard pastas and breads, but just be sure to watch your portions! It can be extremely easy to load up on too many calories with this delicious and healthy food trend.

almond-milkAlmond Milk – This form of milk is lower in calories, carbohydrates and fat because it’s only made with water and almonds. You can enjoy it in your cereal, in your recipes and even in a glass on its own! It’s also lactose-free, making it a great option if you eat vegan foods or are lactose-intolerant. On the other hand, if you’re counting your protein intake or trying to increase it, just beware that almond milk is lower in
protein than standard cow’s milk.

agave nectarAgave Nectar – Noted for it’s “natural” sweetening properties, agave nectar is popular for use with teas, desserts, coffee, spreads, etc. On the other hand, it’s very calorie-dense and composed mostly of fructose. As a result, it can lead to insulin resistance and increased triglyceride levels. For a sweetener that’s lower in calories, we suggest Stevia which you can also buy at the grocery store.
