Practicing Mindfulness: Identifying Hunger vs Thirst

Mindfulness Hunger vs Thirst

Am I hungry?  Or maybe I am just thirsty.   Sometimes hunger and thirst may feel the same to you. Before you reach for a snack, consider the following…

Mindfulness: Are You Hungry or Thirsty?

Your Body Needs Water

Water is an element that’s needed for the body to function properly.  In fact, up to 75 percent of the body’s weight is made up of water.  It is used to maintain temperature, sustain the right environment for your cells and body tissues, form your blood and remove toxins from your body.

Dehydration happens when your body doesn’t have enough water to function properly.  When you take in less water than you need, you can become dehydrated.  If you are mildly dehydrated (only 1-2 percent dehydrated), you may have symptoms such as headache, fatigue, lightheadedness and difficulty concentrating.  These symptoms sound a little like hunger to me!  Typically when these feelings come on, we grab the nearest muffin or sandwich without even thinking.

How Much Fluid Do I Need?

Aim for 64 ounces of fluid every day to start off with.  Remember, if you are exercising or spending time out in the heat, you may need a little more.  Water is a great choice, but other calorie-free fluids can be a good option as well.  Water can get boring, so even though water is best, don’t limit your options.  Find something you like and will drink.

What to Do

If you feel yourself getting hungry, test yourself. Drink a large glass of water and wait for about 15 minutes. See what happens. If you are still hungry after you drink the water, you may be hungry. If you are just thirsty, the feeling will go away.

You might be very surprised. Many times you will find that hunger naturally goes away. Remember to drink all during the day! Don’t let yourself get dehydrated. Stop by drinking fountains, carry a bottle of water along or even set an alarm on your phone for a reminder. Once you get into the habit, it will become much easier.

Drink up! Here’s to your health!
