Don’t Delay Your Medical Appointments – Use Telehealth to Your Advantage

telehealth and covid-19

Covid-19 has changed life for Americans in all sorts of ways. Without a doubt, it has prompted us to think differently about health and safety.

Ironically, during a time when health should be at the forefront of our minds, many people are delaying medical appointments. With social distancing orders still in place across the country, health facilities are limited in capacity. Most health providers are only seeing patients in-person if there is an emergency or an issue that requires attention.

But despite these limitations, we don’t actually have to delay non-emergency medical appointments. Now is a great time to take advantage of telehealth, or telemedicine.

Benefits of Telehealth

Telehealth just means using a virtual platform to meet with your healthcare provider. Different practices are using different platforms to speak with patients. Some are using phone apps that support video calling, while others are using websites or programs to do the same thing.

Using telehealth will allow you to:

  • Update and fill prescriptions
  • Seek and get support
  • Keep your provider informed about your health
  • Identify problems you may not have known existed
  • Talk about health in a private, controlled environment

Telehealth is also convenient. You don’t need to drive anywhere or go through the hassle of checking in to sit in the waiting room. In many cases, appointment costs are also lower.

Why You Shouldn’t Delay

Delaying your medical appointments can put you out of the habit of seeing your healthcare provider regularly. Your providers are a source of knowledge and accountability. Whether it’s a PCP, a dietitian, counselor, psychologist or other provider, they may have valuable tools to offer you during these uncertain times.

Get Started with Telehealth

If you have a pre-scheduled appointment or you’d like to set a new one, call your provider’s office and inquire about telehealth. Is it something they are offering during this time? The practice or facility might have temporary shortened hours, so don’t be afraid to send an email or contact someone in your patient portal as well.

If your provider is not currently offering telehealth, do a quick search for online platforms that may help. TalkSpace is an example of a mental health platform that offers support, community and resources. You can also visit ObesityCareProviders.com to find a provider who is experienced in treating patients who struggle with weight.
