Many people leave healthcare visits feeling rushed, dismissed or unsure about what was decided. This is especially common during conversations about weight, chronic conditions or long-term treatment plans. When appointments feel one-sided, patients may assume they have no real choice.

In reality, most medical decisions are meant to be shared. You are not just receiving care. You are part of the care team.

What Is Shared Decision Making?

Shared decision making is a collaborative approach to care. It means healthcare decisions are made together, based on medical evidence and your values, preferences and goals.

This process includes:

  • Clear explanation of the diagnosis or concern
  • Discussion of available treatment options
  • Review of risks, benefits and tradeoffs
  • Space for patient questions and input

Shared decision making also supports informed consent. You should understand why a recommendation is being made and what alternatives exist before agreeing to a plan.

This approach is especially important in areas where there is more than one reasonable option, such as weight management, medication use or preventive care.

Questions to Ask Your Healthcare Provider
