Talking to a loved one or doctor about weight and health can be difficult, but having that conversation is important – especially when the connection between the two is not always easy to understand.

First, Why Does Your Weight Matter?

When many people think of the term “weight,” negative images come to mind. As a culture, we’re influenced by a constant stream of bias and stigma that cloud the real reason why Your Weight Matters – for your health!

However, there is real reason to recognize that addressing weight and health is extremely important. Today, most American’s do not realize that they are affected by excess weight or obesity and are at risk for weight-related conditions, including:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Heartburn
  • Heart Disease
  • High Cholesterol and Blood Pressure
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Stroke
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Psychological Depression

Why  and How Should You Spread the Word about Why Your Weight Matters?

Chances are, you or someone you know is affected by excess weight or obesity. Having the conversation about weight and health in a safe, respectful way can break down barriers of misunderstanding, release feelings of fear and shame and pave the road for a healthier future.

Whether an individual’s health risks are physical or emotional, excess weight is a serious matter and needs to be addressed by a healthcare professional. However, as you likely know, conveying that message to the public and the loved ones in your life can pose quite the challenge. So, what can you do?

Start with a Conversation

Talk to a loved one, a health professional or other trusted individual about the impact weight has on health – whether the concern is about you or someone else in your life.
