Avocados as a Superfood: Can they Help You Manage Your Weight?

Avocados as a Superfood

Throughout nutrition history, avocados have experienced great trends in popularity. Once feared for their higher fat content, avocados are now surfacing as one of nature’s more miraculous superfoods for their astounding health benefits.

Like any food, however, it’s important to consume avocados in moderation as part of a healthy diet and weight management plan. Why? These superfoods are higher in natural fats and calories than other fruits, but that doesn’t mean you should turn your cheek to them!

Check out all of the ways avocados can aid you in your health plan:

What’s Really Inside Avocados?

  • Heart-healthy monounsaturated fats such as oleic acid
  • A variety of nutritionally dense vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
  • High levels of potassium
  • Healthy doses of fiber
  • Powerful health properties such as the ability to reduce inflammation and reduce cholesterol
  • And more!

How Can You Add More Avocado to Your Diet?

Because of their specific taste, you might be wondering how you can incorporate more of this superfood into your healthy diet. Here are a few creative ways:

  • Serve fresh guacamole with fresh raw veggies instead of most dips
  • Replace mayonnaise with avocado
  • Add sliced avocado to salads and soups instead of cheeses
  • Add sliced avocado to egg, chicken or tuna salad
  • Add sliced avocado and tomato to scrambled eggs

Remember – Moderation is Key:

Because they are indeed higher in fat and calories, it’s important to consume this superfood in moderation – just like you would do with eggs and/or animal proteins. If you’re practicing calorie awareness, simply be cautious of the amount of avocado you’re including in your diet and what you’re pairing it with.

For reference, half of a medium-sized avocado contains approximately 150 calories. This is important to know when you’re preparing a snack or meal that is avocado-based or contains avocados.
